I’ve gotten a lot of messages lately asking if we were still holding meetings. And the answer to that is a resounding YES! Every month on the second and fourth Thursday of the month we have our meetings as described on the “about” page… where you will find location, driving, and bus information. ANYONE with bipolar disorder or depression, and their support people (friends or family) is welcome to come… no special advance registration or fees required. (note: if we ever STOP having our meetings I’ll make a note of it.)

I just missed telling you about this event last year, so not gonna miss telling you about it THIS year. The following is the press release, in full.

Friday, October 10th, 2008

The key to recognition and treatment of mental health disorders

For 18 years, Screening for Mental Health’s National Depression Screening Day® (NDSD) has offered health care providers evidence-based, affordable and easy-to-use mental health education and screening resources. Reaching community members with undetected and untreated mental disorders has never been more important. Studies show that most Americans wait years before they seek treatment for a mental health disorder, and many never seek treatment at all.

NDSD helps you:

  • Screen and educate members of your community for depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder
  • Market your services to community members
  • Educate clinicians about best practices for assessment and treatment
  • Refer those in need of treatment to mental health services

Thanks to NIMH and SAMHSA for contributing materials as part of this effort.

SMH would like to thank the 2008 NDSD funding sponsors whose generosity made the program possible:
Eli Lilly and Company
Forest Laboratories, Inc.
National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems

Register now; Register online for the NDSD 2008, or download the registration form here.

If you would like more information about NDSD, call 781.239.0071 or email us at NDSD@MentalHealthScreening.org.
Screening for Mental Health, Inc., is a non-profit organization that does not provide medical, psychological, diagnostic or treatment services. If you or someone you know is in crisis and need immediate help, please go to the nearest emergency room, call 911, or 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Facilitator training event September 7, 2008

National DBSA sent out a facilitator trainer to meet with us. It was a nice day in North Bend, facilitators from around the state came out. Was a great opportunity for us to meet one another and talk about how our different groups worked. AND for once, get a little advice on running one of our meetings. (Plus free pizza!)

(Traditionally, our facilitators “graduate” into becoming a facilitator, because the existing one gives up and stops coming to the meetings and we take over. Foolish souls that we are.)

Anyway, great advice was gathered. We’ll slowly be trying to implement some of the insights over the next few months.

PLUS: we will be instituting our own version of “facilitator training” before the UWMC meetings. Look for an announcement.
